“Nasci ao som das ilhas e delas herdei o ritmo e o sentir.” A música sempre esteve presente na minha vida: através de uma mãe que me ensinou a cantar e a dançar, de um piano que, desde os meus cinco anos, nos foi oferecido pelo meu pai, de uma casa cheia de irmãos e vida, e de uma pequena cidade alegre e musical chamada Mindelo, que me viu nascer a 18 de junho de 1956.
Muito cedo, após uma estreia casual numa apresentação teatral na minha escola, comecei a cantar com os mais conhecidos grupos musicais de Cabo Verde daquela época, incluindo Os Caites, West Side, A Voz de Cabo Verde, Ritmos Cabo-verdianos, Os Tubarões, Bulimundo, entre outros.
Realizei os meus estudos universitários em Cuba (1975-1980), onde tive a oportunidade de participar num festival universitário (obtendo o primeiro lugar). Posteriormente, vivi na Cidade do México, onde participei em programas radiofónicos cantando e acompanhando-me ao violão (1980-1984).
Foi em Portugal, já a caminho de casa com o meu esposo e três filhos, que gravei o meu primeiro LP, intitulado “Mares do Sul”, com produção musical de Paulino Vieira e Péricles Duarte (1988-1989).
Seguiu-se o regresso a Cabo Verde e a integração no grupo Simentera, com o qual gravei os álbuns “Raiz”, “Barro e Voz”, “Simentera en Serenata” e “TR’aditional”. Paralelamente, lancei a solo o álbum “Menino das Ilhas”, um CD para crianças produzido também por Paulino Vieira, com a participação da minha filha Sara, então com 8 anos.
Este CD contém dois temas da minha autoria que integram compilações da Putumayo: a canção “Barco di Papel” no CD African Playground e a canção “São Horas de Dormir” no CD African Dreamland.
No final dos anos 1990, gravei os álbuns “Sentires”, “De Cor a Som” e “Voz”, os três produzidos por Mário Lúcio.
No meu quinquagésimo aniversário, lancei o álbum “Andante”, uma compilação de temas gravados a solo e com o grupo Simentera.
Em 2004, editei o CD “Voz” com o selo holandês WorldConnection. Este trabalho, gravado apenas com guitarra e voz, foi considerado pela revista inglesa Songlines como um dos 10 melhores CDs de 2004 no género world music.
Em 2008, lancei “Gerassons”, gravado com a minha filha Sara Alhinho, com composições de ambas e produção musical minha, de Kisó Oliveira e Ricardo de Deus. Este álbum representa para mim uma trilogia de sons, gerações e amor.
Mais tarde, lancei um EP intitulado “Mi Ma Nha San Jon”, cujo tema “Beju Furtado” recebeu enorme aceitação e destaque por parte do público.
Por último, gravei e lancei, em parceria com a minha agente Mónica Jardim, o CD “Mornas ao Piano”, cujo primeiro tema, “Mindel di Mãe Auta”, foi premiado como a melhor morna de 2016 nos Cabo Verde Music Awards (CVMA).
Apresentei-me em diversos palcos na Europa com o grupo Simentera e a solo, incluindo o Olympia de Paris, o New Morning, festivais de world music desde a Grécia até à Noruega, o Performing Arts Center nos Estados Unidos, o Piccolo Regio em Turim (Itália), além de países como Senegal, Mauritânia, Brasil, Suécia, Bélgica e Finlândia, entre outros.
A Sara, que começou muito cedo na música, realizou algumas tournées comigo na Europa, promovendo o álbum “Gerassons” em salas como De Doelen e Concertgebouw, na Holanda, Birdland e Concert Haus, na Áustria, Moods, na Suíça, e Blue Inn, em Itália.
Como compositora, tenho temas gravados nos meus CDs a solo e com o grupo Simentera. Entre eles está “Dia C’tchuva Bem”, um dos meus temas mais conhecidos, que integra várias compilações e foi regravado por diversos artistas.
Ao longo da minha carreira, participei durante quatro anos no Festival Sete Sóis Sete Luas, realizando concertos na Itália, Espanha, Portugal e Croácia, a solo e com a Sete Sóis Med Kriol Orquestra, em conjunto com músicos italianos, espanhóis, marroquinos e o português José Barros, culminando na gravação de um CD coletivo.
De 2010 a 2013, integrei o projeto de teatro, dança e canto “Moi et Mon Cheveu: Cabaret Capillaire”, da companhia de teatro francesa La Part du Pauvre, com espetáculos realizados em Cabo Verde e em diversas cidades francesas, além de participações em festivais de teatro, como o de Marselha (julho de 2011) e o de Limoges (outubro de 2013).
Fui distinguida com duas condecorações: a medalha “Ordem do Vulcão” e a medalha de Primeiro Grau, atribuídas, respetivamente, pelo então Presidente da República de Cabo Verde, Comandante Pedro Pires, e pelo Primeiro-Ministro Ulisses Correia.
Como promotora cultural, fundei, em parceria com Mário Lúcio Sousa, o Quintal da Música em 2000, um espaço cultural com grande impacto entre os jovens artistas da época. Este projeto, que durou três anos, organizou o primeiro festival de jazz de Cabo Verde, o Fesquintal de Jazz.
“I was born to the sound of the islands and inherited their rhythm and feeling.” Music has always been present in my life: through a mother who taught me to sing and dance, a piano that my father gifted us when I was five years old, a house full of siblings and life, and a small, joyful, and musical town called Mindelo, where I was born on June 18, 1956.
At a very young age, after a casual debut in a theatrical presentation at my school, I started singing with the most renowned musical groups of Cape Verde at that time, including Os Caites, West Side, A Voz de Cabo Verde, Ritmos Cabo-Verdianos, Os Tubarões, Bulimundo, among others.
I pursued my university studies in Cuba (1975–1980), where I had the opportunity to participate in a university festival (winning first place). Later, I lived in Mexico City, where I participated in radio programs singing and accompanying myself on the guitar (1980–1984).
It was in Portugal, while on my way back home with my husband and three children, that I recorded my first LP, titled Mares do Sul, with musical production by Paulino Vieira and Péricles Duarte (1988–1989).
This was followed by my return to Cape Verde and my integration into the group Simentera, with whom I recorded the albums Raiz, Barro e Voz, Simentera en Serenata, and TR’aditional. At the same time, I released Menino das Ilhas as a solo artist, a children’s album also produced by Paulino Vieira, with the participation of my daughter Sara, who was 8 years old at the time.

I have performed on various stages across Europe with the group Simentera and as a solo artist, including the Olympia in Paris, New Morning, world music festivals from Greece to Norway, the Performing Arts Center in the United States, Piccolo Regio in Turin (Italy), as well as in countries like Senegal, Mauritania, Brazil, Sweden, Belgium, and Finland, among others.
Sara, who also began her musical journey at an early age, joined me on several tours in Europe, promoting the album Gerassons in venues such as De Doelen and Concertgebouw in the Netherlands, Birdland and Concert Haus in Austria, Moods in Switzerland, and Blue Inn in Italy.
As a composer, I have songs recorded on my solo albums and with the group Simentera. Among them is “Dia C’tchuva Bem,” one of my most well-known songs, included in several compilations and recorded by various artists.
Throughout my career, I participated for four years in the Sete Sóis Sete Luas Festival, performing concerts in Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Croatia, both as a solo artist and as part of the Sete Sóis Med Kriol Orquestra, alongside Italian, Spanish, Moroccan, and Portuguese musicians, including José Barros. This collaboration resulted in a collectively recorded CD.
From 2010 to 2013, I was part of the theater, dance, and singing project Moi et Mon Cheveu: Cabaret Capillaire, by the French theater company La Part du Pauvre. The project staged performances in Cape Verde and various French cities, with appearances at theater festivals such as the Marseille Festival (July 2011) and the Limoges Festival (October 2013).
I have been honored with two decorations: the “Order of Volcano” medal and the First Degree Medal, awarded by the former President of the Republic of Cape Verde, Commander Pedro Pires, and Prime Minister Ulisses Correia, respectively.
As a cultural promoter, I founded, together with Mário Lúcio Sousa, the Quintal da Música in 2000, a cultural space that had a significant impact on young artists at the time. This project, which lasted three years, organized Cape Verde’s first jazz festival, the Fesquintal de Jazz.
